Introduction


A well known religion of 5th century BC. Buddhism was founded by Lord Siddhartha Gautam Buddha. Buddha means awakened. Buddhism covers a big variety of beliefs, traditons and is followed in many parts of the world, predominately eastern part. Lord Gautam Buddha preached the people to do good deeds so as to get rid of pain, eliminate the desire, and attain the ultimate goal that is salvation which will free the soul from the cycle of birth and death for ever.


There are two major branches of Buddhism. One is Mahayana (the great vehicle) . It is practised in Korea, China, Vietnam, Singapore, Japan etc countries. The various traditions that Mahayana includes is Zen, Tibetan Buddhism, Tiantai, Shingon, Pure Land etc. Another major branch is Theravada , also called School of Teachers. This branch finds its followers in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar etc countries.One more concept Vajrayana is practised in Tibet, Mongolia etc countries. Three jewels or traditions are the basis of this religion. They are, the Buddha, the Dharma, the Sangha. Taking shelter or refuge of these three is considered as the basic path of Buddhism. Buddhism believes in concepts of deed or karma, rebirth, life cycle.


Gautam Buddha was born in Lumbini around 563 BC and then later was brought up in Kapilvastu. He renounced the world despite his father's wish to become a King and he attained the enlightment at the age of 35 while sitting under a sacred fig (peepal) tree now called as Bodhi tree in Bodhgaya. After that he started preaching the path of getting awakened and did the same for rest of life. He attained salvation at the age of 80 in Kushinagar. Now a days , monks and nuns are there who spread the message of Buddha.
